An entry in Gina's Diary:
Dear Diary,
I feel as if there is more to the child Hedvig than what people are letting on. She acts in an entirely immature way and the girl is fourteen! Fourteen years old! This is simply outrageous. I cannot imagine raising my own kid to be such a bratty, needy kid to the point of throwing a fit if she does not get candy. But seeing as I hold the power in this family, I do not feel like it should bother me.
I control physical matters such as our money and finances. Hjalmar does not know about his money, im pretty sure. But, I also control other intangible matters. I believe in living through the idea of "ignorance is bliss". The reality of not knowing the truth is sometimes better for the soul rather than having that knowledge and becoming self destructive or depressed. The reality of the truth of this family lies with me. I do not want the others to find out the truth of Hedvig and her origins, including her father. They may not understand or even realize that what I'm doing is protecting them. Being of a high social class is decent and well respected, but isolating at times. What really causes the unhappiness is falling down from such a high perch and then being criticized for it. If the knowledge of Gina would get out, then the ramifications could be catastrophic. I will do everything possible to keep this family together, protected, and respected among the high social classes.
Sincerely, Gina
The first half of this is very good and definately reflects that you've been involved in the class discussions. The part about the Ekdal family being in high social status I'm not sure about though. When old Ekdal is leaving the party everyone feels awkward around him, and Hjalmar's life is essentially paid for him. I do not feel that they are in high social standing, especially since Gina was a maid for Werle. If anything I believe that the family's name has already fallen from grace and Hjalmar is trying is trying to restore it, thus the last bit about Gina trying the keep the family respected among high social classes isn't really true to the story...The rest is good though
ReplyDeleteI like your diary. Gina would probably write an entry like this, but I find it interesting why Gina would hide the truth. It will only hurt her in the long run. Also, it's really interesting how Hedvig calls "daddy" instead of father or "mother" instead of mommy. It might be a cultural thing, but that indicates their relationship as well. But good job with your diary Jarrad!
ReplyDeleteGood diary entry. I would agree with Kellsie, that the first half of this is definitely good. However, I'm not entirely sure Hjalmar really knew the truth and was concealing it on purpose. Is there evidence for this? The part about "ignorance is bliss" is true, though, and I believe that Hjalmar stayed ignorant despite some serious evidence that Hedvig wasn't his child.
